The British government is facing a huge legal challenge over erectile dysfunction, and is warning it will be “more expensive” if it doesn’t keep its promise of a “reliable” generic version of Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the regulator, said the cost of generic Viagra, the same medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, would be “more expensive” if it didn’t keep the patent on the drug.

Viagra, approved in Britain in 2000, costs £19.75 a tablet and is available without a prescription. The CMA is not aware of the possible cost implications for generics, so it will likely not be able to advise consumers to stop using them.
The CMA’s decision comes just days after the government launched its own competition against generic drugs for erectile dysfunction. The drugmaker has been facing challenges over its patents for Viagra and Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drug. It has faced lawsuits over the generics. The CMA is also considering other options, including generic versions of the erectile dysfunction drug Levitra, which was approved in Britain in 1998, and generic versions of Stendra and Vardenafil, which are currently under investigation for safety risks.
